Members Profiles

JUDY MURDOCH OAM

Originally known as South East Book Promotions, the group formed in 1989 to promote the increasing number of local history books which were often overlooked by book sellers.  Over the last 33 years they have held seminars across the South East exploring the history of our area resulting in a book “Exploring the Anatomy of a Region”.  Also produced was a series of 13 small books to mark 150 years of European settlement across the South East of South Australia.  In 1994 the group won the first Premier’s Regional Development Award and then in 1997 hosted the State History Conference held at Struan House.

By the year 2005 a Commonwealth Grant scheme called Sharing Australia’s Stories, enabled the publication of Surveyor General’s George Woodroffe Goyder’s 1864 descriptions of South Eastern pastoral runs which were held by Station Records in Adelaide.

In 2013 the name of the group was changed in recognition of the Western Victorian members and the shared history in the common border regions.  Kanawinka being the name of the geological fault line which runs from Keith to Portland.

In 2018 a very successful Writers Workshop was held at Naracoorte with eager participants travelling from all over South Australia and Victoria to attend.

Throughout all of this Judy Murdoch has always been on hand to share her knowledge and advice to any budding author or historian.  She is the author of ten very successful local history books.

Judy has been a volunteer and driving force behind the Sheep’s Back Museum for many years.
